TANCET 2008 Quant Question 3 : Number Properties - Fractions

Question

If two fractions, each of which has a value between 0 and 1, are multiplied together, the product will be:
  1. always greater than either of the original fractions
  2. always less than either of the original fractions
  3. sometimes greater and sometimes less than either of the original fractions
  4. remains the same
  5. never less than either of the original fractions

Correct Answer : always less than either of the original fractions. Choice (2)

Explanatory Answer

The easiest way to solve this question is to take values.

The question states that the two fractions, each have values between 0 and 1.

Let us say on of the fraction is 1/2and the other fraction is 1/3.

The product of the two fractions is 1/2 * 1/3 = 1/6.
1/6 is lesser than both 1/2 and 1/3.

So, the correct answer is that the product is always less than either of the original fractions.

Correct Answer (2)

Level of difficulty : Easy
