Mixtures Alligation - CAT 2007 Math Questions
Question 4 the day:
April 10, 2006
The question for the day is a sample practice problem in Mixtures and alligation, an Arithmetic Topic. This question is an example of differing concentration of a constituent in a mixture.
Question:
A 20 litres mixture of milk and water comprising 60% pure milk is mixed with "x" litres of pure milk. The new mixture comprises 80% milk. What is the value of "x"?
- 40 litres
- 20 litres
- 8 litres
- 16 litres
Correct Answer - 20 litres. Choice (2)
Explanatory Answer
The original mixture comprises 20 litres of milk and water.
Out of the 20 litres, 60% is pure milk. i.e., 12 litres is pure milk and the remaining 8 litres is water.
When "x" litres of pure milk is added, we will have 12 + x litres of milk in the new mixture.
And there will be 20 + x litres of the new mixture.
The question also states that this (12 + x) litres of pure milk accounts for 80% of (20 + x) litres of the mixture.
Therefore, 12 + x =
Solving for x, we get x = 20 litres.
