Algebra - Quant Practice Questions - CAT 2007 Preparation

Question 4 the day : March 04, 2003
The question for the day is from the topic of Algebra.

Question
If (x + 2) 2 = 9 and (y + 3) 2 = 25, then the maximum value of x / y is

(1) 1 / 2
(2) 5 / 2
(3) 5 / 8
(4) 1 / 8

Correct Answer is 5 / 8. Correct Choice is (3)

Explanatory Answer

(x + 2) 2 = 9
=> x + 2 = ± 3
=> x = 1 or -5
and (y + 3) 2 = 25
=> y + 3 = ± 5
=> y = 2 or -8
Therefore, maximum value of x / y = -5 / -8 = 5 / 8.
